Clinton Community School District

The Clinton Community School District encompasses 112 square miles. It includes the village of Clinton and the townships of Clinton and Bradford, plus portions of the townships of Turtle, La Prairie and Sharon and parts of the City of Beloit. The district is serving about 1,218 students during the 1991-92 school year, with that number expected to increase to 1,275 by 1995 and 1,350 by the year 2000.

Board and Mission

The Clinton Board of Education sets the district's annual budget and its policies. The board is composed of seven members elected at large in the spring and serving staggered three-year terms.

The board meets on the third Monday of each month at the Clinton Senior High School, and members of the public are encouraged to attend board meetings. Agendas for these meetings are posted on the doors of all school buildings prior to each meeting, and notices are sent to the news media.

 The district's mission statement is:

"In cooperation with parents and the community, the mission of the Clinton Community School District is to implement programs and conditions that provide each student with the knowledge, competencies and attitudes necessary to become a responsible contributing member of our global society."

The board has also established goals that it believes students should achieve based on their educational experiences. These goals are tied to several different "core ideas," such as self-esteems, social development, personal responsibility, problem solving, communication, knowledge, goal setting, creativity, the changing world, and employment, health and life-long learning.

Students, Staff and Facilities

Approximately 629 students in grades K-5 attend Clinton Elementary School during the 1991-92 school year. The building was expanded in 1991 to include four additional classrooms, and portions of the building were remodeled into multi-purpose rooms and larger faculty offices. At present, about 261 students in grades 6-8 attend the Clinton Middle School. This building, constructed in 1924, was Clinton's high school for many years. An elevator was installed in the building during the 1991-92 year.

The Clinton Senior High School serves 328 students in grades 9-12 during the 1991-92 school year. This facility was constructed in 1958, and a 1976 expansion nearly doubled its size. No recent changes have been made in the building, though an all-weather running track was constructed next to the high school in 1986.

The district employs 155 individuals, including 85 professional teachers, five administrators and 65 support staff. The average teacher/student ratio for grades K-8 is 1:15 and for grades 9-12 is 1:12. A professional librarian serves each building, as do art, music, physical education, and special education teachers. The district employs a school psychologist, school nurse and speech & language therapists to serve the entire district. The district is especially well known for its vocational and special education programs.

One of the advantages of being part of a smaller school district is that students have more opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. For example, approximately 85 per cent of all high school students are in the senior high school band. Students from the district have won many awards and honors in the areas of academics, fine arts and athletics.

Special Honors and Programs

Sixth grade students spend a week at Camp Upham Woods near Wisconsin Dells as part of an outdoor education program. Clinton is the only district in the state that dedicates an entire week to this program.

Through a program called the Young People's Short-Term Exchange, a small group of 8th grade students spend three weeks at Towa and Tase Junior High School in Japan, and a similar number of students from those schools spend three weeks at the Clinton Middle School.

Every other year, a number of junior and seniors taking Spanish travel to Mexico over the spring break. In the alternate years, juniors and seniors taking German spend three weeks in Germany during summer vacation.

The Clinton Senior High School Band has performed at Disney World several times at the invitation of Disney World.

A beginning teacher in the school district was one of two teachers in the state to receive the Sally Mae Outstanding Beginning Teacher Award.
